Job Description

Stethoscope SA is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Clinical Associate for our client in Cape Town. The Clinical Associate will work closely with healthcare professionals to provide high-quality medical care and support to patients in various clinical settings.

In this role, you will perform a range of clinical tasks, assist in patient assessments, and contribute to the overall healthcare delivery process. Your ability to work effectively in a team and maintain a patient-centered approach will be essential to your success.

The Clinical Associate (ClinA) will also work under the supervision of a medical doctor/surgeon and be registered with the HPCSA. The role focus will also be on assisting the surgeon and supporting perioperative patient management. Your exact responsibilities may vary by hospital policy and supervising doctor, but typically include the following for this vacancy:

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct patient assessments, including obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, and noting changes in patient conditions.
  • Assist physicians in developing and implementing treatment plans.
  • Provide clinical support in various medical procedures and interventions.
  • Administer medications, perform diagnostic tests, and interpret results as directed by supervising physicians.
  • Educate patients and their families about health management, treatment plans, and preventive care.
  • Assist with the management of patient records and documentation, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and confidentiality.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to clinical research projects.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care and referrals.
  • Stay updated on medical best practices and advancements in clinical care.
Pre-operative Responsibilities
  • Assess and review patient history and clinical notes prior to surgery
  • Conduct pre-operative examinations and ensure necessary investigations are complete
  • Obtain informed consent under supervision where required
  • Prepare patients for surgery (documentation, checklists, and clinical preparation)
  • Assist with patient positioning and preparation for anaesthesia
  • Communicate with theatre staff regarding patient readiness
Intra-operative Responsibilities
  • Assist the surgeon during procedures (first or second assist depending on experience)
  • Maintain sterile technique in theatre
  • Retract tissues, suction, and assist with exposure of the surgical field
  • Control bleeding under supervision
  • Assist with suturing and wound closure
  • Handle surgical instruments and assist with procedural steps as directed by the surgeon
  • Assist the anaesthetist if required (within scope and competence)
Post-operative Responsibilities
  • Assist with patient transfer to recovery
  • Monitor patients in the immediate post-operative period
  • Manage post-operative documentation and clinical notes
  • Prescribe or administer medication under doctor supervision and within scope
  • Perform post-operative patient reviews and follow-ups
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participate in ward rounds for surgical patients
  • Assist with emergency procedures when required
  • Support theatre efficiency and communication between the surgical team
  • Contribute to patient safety protocols and theatre checklists
Qualifications
  • Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree in Clinical Associate studies or a relevant healthcare field.
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Clinical Associate.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records systems and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Commitment to providing high-quality patient care and adhering to ethical standards.
  • Flexibility to work various shift patterns as required.
