Job Description
Job Purpose The Geochemist will assist the Senior and Associate Geochemist to manage and implement small to large scale projects or perform tasks of larger projects undertaking geochemical studies primarily related to the mining industry.The candidate will assist with analysis of large geochemical and water quality datasets and critical interpretation of data pertaining to mining environments. Experience in the analysis of large datasets, including quality control, data interpretation and reporting will be essential as is a general knowledge of mining-related environmental issues, geochemical processes, regulations and policies. They must have an ability to work independently and generate, implement and complete multiple work assignments in a dynamic environment. Candidate will need to undertake greenfield and brownfield site visits in Africa and Middle East region for site scoping and sampling tasks.Mine setting and environmental monitoring field work experience will be an advantage. Min requirements 2 plus years of experience in consulting environment. Bachelor of Science (hons), Environmental Geochemistry/Earth Sciences and/or a postgraduate degree in a related field. Proficiency in MS Office with intermediate Excel and Word knowledge and an aptitude to learn and work with various digital applications. Masters qualification in relative field will be an advantage. Knowledge of PHREEQC geochemical modelling advantageous. Project management experience advantageous. Good fitness and a willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork in challenging environments. A valid drivers' license with a minimum of 2 years driving experience. Defensive / advance drivers certification an advantage. Responsibilities Assist in the implementation of small to large projects or whole tasks of larger projects. Interpret technical data and information from maps and historical documents. Compile technical geochemical reports. Undertake project and support administrative duties. Undertake desktop research, gap analysis and baseline studies. Prepare site H&S documentation and training / induction requirements. Undertake site sampling work throughout Africa and Middle East, tasks will include groundwater quality sampling, collection of waste and extractive materials and soil / sediment samples for geochemistry / soil investigations. Undertake conventional contaminated land Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessments. Use geochemical modelling software to model source terms for input into groundwater modelling and predict leaching risk profiles of extractive wastes. Consult with in-house and external clients, subcontractors and specialist laboratories. Skills/Attributes: Excellent written and verbal communication skills (in English), with demonstrated skill in technical report writing. Excellent time management skills and an ability to multi-task and prioritise tasks. Detail-oriented with a mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Collate, screen and interpret large datasets. Must be able to work in fast-paced, dynamic and challenging environment. Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills. Should be able to work independently as well as in a team and communicate confidently with others. Thrive on unpacking geochemical technical issues to find solutions for SLR client's environmental challenges. Good fitness level, able to work in tough environments and be adaptable.
