Job Description

Purpose

The Faculty of Natural and Applied sciences invite applications for a Lecturer position under the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP), which is a nationally funded initiative aimed at developing the next generation of academics through a structured, mentored, and supportive career development pathway.

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Sciences seeks to appoint an nGAP Lecturer in Soil Science. The incumbent will be expected to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Agriculture, with a particular emphasis on Soil Science. This role further entails the development of research programmes, the undertaking of research, and the supervision of postgraduate students, with a primary focus on the Northern Cape. A broad-based academic background in Soil Science, together with postgraduate specialization in Soil Science, is a key requirement for this position.

The appointee will report to the Head of Department: Biological and Agricultural Sciences and will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the development and growth of the Department. The workload of the incumbent will be aligned with the nGAP guidelines for the duration of their PhD studies.

Minimum requirements
  • A Master of Science degree in Soil Science
  • Candidates should have achieved an average of 70% or above in their Masters.
  • Candidate must be forty (40) years or younger
  • At least two years teaching experience in a higher education environment
  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Commit to the completion of PhD studies, within a period of six years.
Recommended requirements
  • It is highly recommended that the incumbent has knowledge of or has teaching experience in Soil Science.
  • Evidence of teaching relevant modules in Soil Science.
  • Experience with online teaching platforms and blended learning approaches will be an added advantage.
  • Candidates who have registered for a PhD will have added advantage.
  • At least one relevant, full-length paper published in a peer reviewed scholarly journal will be an added advantage
Duties
  • Deliver on teaching and learning in undergraduate and post graduate Soil Science and conduct practicals at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Undertake curriculum and programme development in the Department
  • Undertake supervision of students at postgraduate level once completed PhD.
  • Participate in academic administration and subject management in the Department
  • Seek research funding and conduct research within relevant fields
  • Contribute to capacity building and collegiality within the Department
  • Engage with a diversity of stakeholders and community, including academic collaboration, research funding in the industry and government.
  • Participate in Work Integrated Learning (WIL) for undergraduate students.
