Transnet SOC Ltd invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the Train Assistant Trainee Programme 2026.
Transnet is offering a Train Assistant Trainee Programme aimed at equipping individuals with the skills and practical experience needed to support train operations safely and efficiently.
Successful candidates will assist the Train Driver in the safe handling of different types of trains and locomotive consists, including:
- Airbrake
- High speed
- Heavy haul
The goal is to ensure freight and cargo reach destinations safely, on time, and without damage.
Key Responsibilities- Sign on duty at designated workplace
- Determine which locomotive must be prepared
- Obtain and place equipment on locomotive
- Check and supplement prescribed equipment
- Clean working area
- Assist with locomotive start-up procedures
- Conduct locomotive brake tests
- Despatch locomotive
- Obtain radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, and telemeters
- Check functionality of communication equipment
- Attach/detach vehicles according to works order
- Mount telemeters where necessary
- Complete vehicle list and vacuum forms
- Mount train indicators
- Perform brake tests with Train Driver
- Perform shunting activities as per directives
- Place and remove trucks at sidings
- Update vehicle lists
- Assist Train Driver during the journey
- Compare signal positions verbally
- Reset locomotive trip-outs
- Assist during emergencies
- Complete Train Journal after every shift
- Submit documentation to Section Manager
- Ensure accurate salary processing
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics or Physical Science
- Minimum age of 21 years
- Minimum height of 1.6 metres
- Physically fit (hearing, vision, mental and physical fitness will be tested)
- Psychomotor ability (assessed through Vienna Testing System - VTS standards)
- Ability to carry heavy objects
- Willingness to undergo medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments
- Willingness to complete theoretical and practical training successfully
- Must obtain Train Assistant certification to work independently
- Candidates must successfully complete theoretical and practical assessments.
- Regular medical and behavioural assessments will be conducted every 12 months.
- Safety compliance is mandatory at all times.
