Job Description

Cementation Africa invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Ventilation Officer to be placed in Tharisa mine. The successful candidate will report to the Project Manager. The company will provide remuneration and benefits relevant and appropriate to the position. Preference will be given to Historically Disadvantaged South African (HDSA) candidates. Applications only open to South African Citizens / Permanent Residents.

Responsibilities
  • Engineering installations are constructed according to agreed standards, procedures and specifications
  • Plan and coordinate ventilation construction and sanitation activities in line with budget
  • Monitor and control the installation and commissioning of ventilation systems
  • Maintain ventilation and occupational hygiene systems, set and maintain ventilation and occupational hygiene schedules
  • Maintain stock levels of equipment required for underground ventilation construction and chemicals for the maintenance of underground sanitation facilities
  • Perform accurate calculations, calculate refrigeration plant efficiencies, measure and calculate the performance of main fans etc.
  • Effective and timeous environmental condition monitoring and reporting, assist with generation of statistical reports
  • Monitor and control ventilation related sampling and testing, make recommendations for improvement
  • Collect water samples for bacteriological and chemical analysis and take appropriate action
  • Compile reports on the occupational hygiene condition and maintenance efficiency of underground sanitation facilities, refuge bays, lamp rooms etc.
  • Conduct planned task observations, risk assessments, investigations, inspections and audits, report non-conformance, compile and analyse reports and provide recommendations
  • Support change management initiatives and assist with the implementation of initiatives aimed at eliminating waste, improving productivity, and reducing operating costs
  • Participate in safety and relevant site team meetings, make recommendations for improvement
  • Timeous repair, maintenance and calibration of ventilation and occupational hygiene related equipment and instruments
  • Assist with the development of ventilation and occupational hygiene standards and procedures
  • Effective internal and external stakeholder engagement to ensure smooth workflows, interface with client representatives and site project teams
  • Understand and comply with legislation, mine regulations and standards, and the company policies, procedures, standards and safety protocols
  • Proactive risk identification and mitigation in line with legislation and company standards, policies and procedures
  • Effective self-management in alignment with the company values
Qualifications and Skills
  • Grade 12 (with Mathematics and Physical Science) or NQF 4 equivalent
  • Chamber of Mines Intermediate Mine Environmental Control Certificate
  • Certificate in Occupational Hygiene (advantageous)
  • Registered with the Mine Ventilation Society on Intermediate level (advantageous)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Proficient in English, written and verbal, with ability to communicate across levels
  • Ability to apply expertise and technology
  • Ability to conduct inspections, compile reports and provide recommendations for improvement
  • Ability to read and interpret ventilation plans and technical data
  • Proficiency in ventilation and occupational hygiene monitoring instruments and reporting tools
  • High safety awareness and attention to detail
  • Valid Medical Certificate of Fitness to work underground
Work Experience
  • Minimum 3 years of practical ventilation and occupational hygiene experience in an underground mining environment
  • Experience planning underground ventilation construction requirements and setting ventilation and occupational hygiene schedules
  • Experience coordinating ventilation and sanitation activities in an underground environment
  • Experience conducting air quality investigations and generating reports with recommendations for improvement
  • Knowledge and understanding of ventilation principles, air monitoring equipment, and relevant regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of environmental principles, condition monitoring and reporting
  • Knowledge and understanding of occupational hygiene and sanitation principles
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act
