Collaborative Librettist Needed for Original Christmas Cantata (2026 Season)
I am a composer working on a commissioned Christmas cantata for a local church, to be premiered during the 2026 Christmas season.
I am seeking a collaborative librettist to write the book/text for the work, blending original secular poetry, traditional Christmas carols, and the Christian Nativity story into a cohesive, dramatically compelling narrative that can be set to music.
This project is ideal for a writer who enjoys working closely with a composer, understands how text functions in musical settings, and is comfortable honoring tradition while crafting something fresh and expressive.
Scope of Work & Deliverables
The librettist will:
• Develop a clear narrative arc for a fulllength Christmas cantata (approx. 25–35 minutes of music)
• Write original poetic and lyrical texts that:
• Interweave with traditional Christmas carols (public domain and/or specified titles)
• Support and illuminate the Nativity story
• Balance sacred meaning with accessible, human, and emotionally resonant language
• Shape text with musical setting in mind (clarity, rhythm, singability)
• Collaborate on structural decisions (solo vs. chorus moments, narration, pacing)
• Revise text based on musical and dramatic needs
Final deliverables may include:
• A complete libretto/book
• Sectionbysection text aligned to musical numbers
Required Skills & Experience
Required:
• Strong writing skills in poetry and/or lyric writing
• Comfortable working with Christian themes, especially the Nativity story
• Ability to write with musical sensitivity (phrasing, repetition, clarity)
• Openness to feedback and revision in a collaborative creative process
Preferred (but not required):
• Previous experience with librettos, song lyrics, choral texts, or theater
• Familiarity with church music, choral works, or sacred performance traditions
• Experience adapting or responding to existing texts (e.g., hymns, poetry)
